Charities

Wardie Parish Church supports a number of local and global charities.
Local Charities
We support a number of local charities helping people here, or based here and helping to relieve suffering abroad:
- Fresh Start donations and volunteers helping people make a home for themselves.
- We donate to foodbanks or clothes shares in Edinburgh, like Granton Goes Greener.
- We help locally based charities for refugees such as Edinburgh Direct Aid International, who help refugees here and take aid to Ukraine, Lebanon and Gaza.
At Christmas every year:
- we collect presents for local children affected by imprisonment; read more here
- we send shoeboxes of simple gifts and a Christmas message via Blythswood
- and we choose a charity that our young people recommend (to get money collected at our special Christmas season church services).
Every three years, we offer support for that period, to another local charity, currently Bethany Christian Trust: ending homelessness, one person at a time.
St Columba’s Hospice
Wardie Church appreciates the outstanding work of St Columba’s Hospice which is a near neighbour situated, like the church, in the middle of the parish. The Hospice is remembered regularly in public prayer, and its appeals publicised within the congregation. Wardie Church has made financial donations to the Hospice over the years from communion offerings and more specific fundraising events.
Many members of the congregation have been/are volunteers at the Hospice in a wide variety of roles, and in its shops – some over very many years.
We are grateful to the Hospice for having provided meeting space for church events when required.
Global Charities
At Wardie we care as part of a global community, and we support charities working to relieve suffering overseas:
- Christian Aid, committed to ending poverty worldwide.
- Blythswood Christmas Shoebox Appeal, bringing hope.
- Tearfund Toilet Twinning, offering hygiene education, water and toilets in the world’s poorest areas.
- We encourage the use of Fairtrade products wherever possible.
- Every three years we support another global charity for that period, currently Edinburgh Direct Aid International for refugees here and aid to Ukraine, Lebanon and Gaza.
